What is a transponder key?

A key that has a device imbedded inside which transmits and receives data. These devices contain one of over a trillion unique codes. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the transponder sends a signal to a disc-shaped antenna mounted behind the steering wheel. If the signal is recognized by the vehicles immobilizer, then the engine will start. If the signal is not recognized or has been weakened by damage to the transponder then the immobilizer will shut down vital operating systems to the engine and it will not run. This technology greatly reduces the risk of auto theft and provides a peace of mind for the vehicles owner.

Can I disable the transponder key system in a 2000 Ranger?

I would like to get rid of the passive anti theft system. Is it possible?

it can be done. not reccomended, but possible.
really what you should do is tape a programmed key to the inside of the clamshell covering she steering column. this is similar to what installers do with a remote start system. this effectively bypasses the PATS system. use a regular non "chip" key to operate your vehicle. go to any place that makes keys and have them use a blank for a F-350 through 2006.
there really isnt a downside to the PATS system. unless your an absent minded scientist that loses keys all the time. as long as you have 3 working "chip" keys, you have no problems. if you lose one, you can get another from the dealer, and program it yourself in about 10 seconds.
start losing keys, lose the last one and youve got to tow it in the absence of a mobile locksmith with a programmer. either way your stuck.
